ARTIST PRESENTATION

Kind of fashion bestiary, Marc Le Rest paintings pattern lions, giraffe, chimpanzees, zebras and so on with contemporary and erotic lace outfits. These paintings strive to revive a tenuous balance, specific in the portraits of painters such as Memling, Holbein, Dürer, Clouet, Dashort, Vaneyck, Van der Weyden, in Northern Europe in the XVth, XVIth and XVIIth centuries, the balance between a formalist minimalism applied to the subject representation and an almost obsessional and baroque application in the details representation, especially in the costumes. This clear inspiration bonds with another one, the animal painting tradition in art history, from hunting paintings of Snyders or Van Aelst, the paintings of Catlin, Stubbs, and the english school, but also naturalist artists such as Audubon and his most contemporary heir, Walton Ford.Marc Le Rest artworks evolve like fashion collections where the outfits, divested from the human body dictatorship, and therefore cleared from any « signifiant » and any temptation to an identification, are free to take any kind of imaginable forms to adorn any kind of bestialities. And, by doing so, little by little, is created what ought to be called a peculiar "fashion zoo".
